The Opa-locka Community Development Corportation (OLCDC) was afforded the opportunity to receive an additional $25,000 by The Miami Foundation to further assist families in crisis. The main goal of our efforts is to empower the family unit and ensure needs are met in order to provide a safe and livable environment for children.In 2018, our Family Service department serviced over 650 families with five featured programs that helped enable and empower family units and children: Schools of Hope, Summer Arts & Enrichment, Codemasters (middle and high school) and the Keeping Our Promise program, being the nucleus of the department. OLCDC applied for the “Opportunity” subject area—ensuring all residents have equitable access to the same opportunities-- with a focus on the well-being of children and families. OLCDC was awarded the $25,000 for a year, starting in July 2019 to aid families with emergency assistance and tutoring services. This grant will allow us to provide what is considered family’s basic needs, which include but are not limited to: • Housing • Utility bill assistance• Food and clothing• Children bedding and furnitureAs a part of their signature program, The Miami Foundation brings together over 100 donors collaboratively to give to their Community Grants program in an effort to provide support to local organizations, like OLCDC, whose initiative is to improve the quality of life in three areas: Opportunity, Creativity and Resiliency. The funds from this grant will allow us to utilize resources that contribute to the stabilization of children and families who are in situations of crisis that otherwise would not be available to them.
